Foodie Friday-Five of the Best Apples For Baking This Fall

Image
🍎🍏 A Few of the Best Apples For Baking🍎🍏 Fall is nearly here, and I am so happy.  Fall is my favorite time of year.  A popular fruit this time of year is the apple and there are so many fantastic things you can make with apples.   I would love to make some recipes that include apples, but I never know what type of apple I should use because they are not all created equal.  I had read somewhere that the best apples for baking are the ones that keep their structure and don't turn to mush in the baking process.   If I were to go to the grocery store to select apples for a recipe, I would tend to pick what I thought was the prettiest apple and not make an informed decision base on specific apples.  With that in mind, I decided to do some research to find the best apple to use for fall recipes that include apples.  Let's head to Google. 🍎🍏 The Granny Smith Apple One of the most popular baking apples, the classic Granny Smith puts the American in apple...

Food-The Queen and Marmalade Sandwiches

Image
I do not follow the goings on of the royal family.  Over the years, I have heard bits and pieces of their lives, but other than an occasional tidbit of news, gossip, or a tragedy such as with Princess Diana, I know very little.   For some reason, I have always had great respect for the Queen.  She always seemed to be a person of high integrity, plus her physical appearance reminded me of my grandmother.  Since her death, I have read a few articles in relation to her life, and it has been an amazing one.  As far as food it seems she enjoyed marmalade.  There is even mention of marmalade sandwiches. The skit above was made with Paddington Bear for an upcoming Jubliee.  In the skit, Paddington Bear, who loves marmalade, had a marmalade sandwich hidden in his hat.  The queen surprises Paddington with one she carries in her purse. It seems that the Queen did enjoy marmalade on her morning toast, but there is no mention of her eating marmalade san...

Foodie Friday-Savory Pie Crust With Chives. How to Add Chives/Herbs to a Pre-Made Pie Crust

Image
I made a tomato pie recently.   The pie crust was the best thing about that recipe.  What made it so good were the chives that I added to the crust and it is super simple to make. You can add just about any herb to a savory pie crust.  What you choose is based on the flavor profile you are trying to achieve. The tomato pie recipe I was making added chives to both the store-bought pie crust and to the pie itself.  Here is the super simple recipe... Ingredients: *Packaged refrigerated piecrusts.  Be sure and get a package with two piecrusts.  *Two tablespoons of Chopped Fresh Chives. (If you decide to use dried herbs, use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon for each herb you use.  I used fresh chives.) Instructions: *Unroll one pie crust and sprinkle with 2 Tablespoons of fresh chopped chives.  *Place the second piecrust on top and then roll to seal the piecrusts together. *Transfer to a 9" pie plate pressing into the bottom and up the sides of the plate. There you h...

Foodie Friday-National Doughnut Day. The First Friday in June

Image
Today I was informed that it was National Donut Day.  I thought to myself, I will take any excuse to get a doughnut, so let's make the best of this holiday. Before I go any further, I want to find the correct spelling of doughnuts.  I see it spelled both donut and doughnut. Here is what Grammarly says about how to spell this delicious treat. "Donut is an alternate spelling of doughnut. Some dictionaries point out that donut is rarely used outside the United States. All of them recognize doughnut as the main spelling, as do some of the more popular style guides. Doughnut might be the spelling you should use if you want to be sure you’re not making a mistake." In 1917 ladies from the Salvation Army went to France to establish bases near the front lines during WWI. In small huts, they would provide essential goods and sweet treats for the soldiers. These treats were a morale boost to the soldiers.  This is why the soldiers were called doughboys when they came home from...

Foodie Friday-Let's Tell a Few Food Jokes

Image
Welcome to Foodie Friday.  I love a good joke. My grandson is always telling me jokes.  Some he makes up, and some he finds in books or from his group of friends.  That got me thinking; there must be some good food jokes out there, so I thought I would search for a few on Google and share them with you... 1-What do you call a fake noodle?  An Impasta. 2-When potatoes have babies, what are they called?  Tater Tots. 3-What do you get if you cross an apple and a Christmas tree? A pineapple. 4-What do you call a sad strawberry? A blueberry!  5- What do you call cheese that isn't yours?  Nacho cheese! 6-What does a ghost drink? Booze 7-Why shouldn't you tell an egg a joke? Because it might crack up! 8-Why did the chef get arrested for assault?  Because he got caught beating an egg! 9-What do you call corn that joins the army?  A Kernel 10-Why did the grape stop in the middle of the road?  Because he ran out of juice I hope you enjoy...

Foodie Friday-Making Muffins? Here Are Some Muffin Tips

Image
I love a good muffin.  I especially love a nice moist muffin. I had selected a muffin recipe that declared it was one of the best moist muffins out there and I could not wait to try the recipe and share it with you.  Well, I did make the recipe and there were many steps and I was extremely disappointed with the outcome.  First off they did not even look good.  Second, they were dry and a bit flavorless.  Sadly I have no muffin recipe to share with you.  What I thought I would do is share a few muffin tips so let's get started. Here are a few tips I found online... Don't over mix your muffins or they will become tough. When combining dry ingredients with liquid ingredients, stir only until the mixture is combined. The batter may still be lumpy.  A wooden spoon is recommended rather than a mixer. In most cases fill your muffin cups about 3/4 full unless told otherwise by the recipe. Your eggs, butter, and milk should be at room temp.  This aids in m...
