Books-Book Recommendations For Oct 2022 Plus What I will be Reading for October

 I love to read scary books in October, but not too frightening.  I like a good horror story if it is not too graphic.  I love suspense and mystery and even a good scary romance if it is not too steamy.  With all of that in mind, I decided to look at ten possible reads for the Holloween season, Oct 2022

3-Scritch Scratch by Lindsay Currie-For fans of Small Spaces and the Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine comes a chilling ghost story based on real Chicago history about a malevolent spirit, an unlucky girl, and a haunting mystery that will tie the two together.

4-We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson-Taking readers deep into a labyrinth of dark neurosis, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a deliciously unsettling novel about a perverse, isolated, and possibly murderous family and the struggle that ensues when a cousin arrives at their estate.

5- The Lost Ones by Anita Frank-Reeling from the death of her fiancé, Stella Marcham welcomes the opportunity to stay with her pregnant sister, Madeleine, at her imposing country mansion, Greyswick – but she arrives to discover a house of unease and her sister gripped by fear and suspicion.
Before long, strange incidents begin to trouble Stella – sobbing in the night, little footsteps on the stairs – and as events escalate, she finds herself drawn to the tragic history of the house.

Books That I Have Read That I Recommend

7-The Whisper Man by Alex North- In this dark, suspenseful thriller, Alex North weaves a multi-generational tale of a father and son caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town. 

I gave it 4 Stars.

8-Fierce Kingdom by Gin Phillips-The zoo is nearly empty as Joan and her four-year-old son soak up the last few moments of playtime. They are happy, and the day has been close to perfect. But what Joan sees as she hustles her son toward the exit gate minutes before closing time sends her sprinting back into the zoo, her child in her arms. And for the next three hours—the entire scope of the novel—she keeps on running.

I gave this 5 stars because as I read it, I could not breathe.  It is difficult to read because it could happen, which may be why I had such a visceral reaction as I read.  

9-The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates-Only one thing is certain: Ashburn's dead are not at rest. 

The one thing to know about this book is that it is like an old horror movie.  It could never happen, but that is what makes it a Halloween read.  I gave this book 4 stars.

Just Because It's Stephen King

10-Fairy Tale by Stephen King-Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes deep into the well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for their world or ours.

Here are the five books I have selected for October...

I will listen to "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" and "Fairy Tale." Fairy Tale is over 600 pages, and on Audible, it is a 24-hour listen, so I plan to start it in Sept. It better be good!

I have chosen 3 physical reads.  Stolen Tongues, The Book of Cold Cases and Scritch Scratch.  It should be a fun and chilling reading month.
