The Fine Art of Solo Dining
One thing that may be a bit scary or uncomfortable for the newly single is the prospect of eating out alone. Over my years as a divorced woman, I have taken myself out to eat on many occasions. Let's take a look at some helpful tips to help us on our dining solo adventure.
Dining alone is a form of self-care. It is one way for us to take care of ourselves. We do this by dressing the part and taking ourselves to the restaurant of our choice where we can relax, unwind, and enjoy a wonderful meal that we don't need to prepare ourselves. In this way, we feel a bit catered to and maybe even a little bit special.
Many solo diners feel nervous about going to a restaurant alone. Some feel they will be judged by others or pitied because they lack a companion. According to an article called Eating Alone? The new American diner flies solo, 57% of people dinning our are solo diners. I would say that most people don't judge those of us who dine solo. If, perchance, someone does, it is their problem, not that of the solo diner. I say ignore them and take care of yourself.
Solo Dining Tips
*Dress comfortably and appropriately for the restaurant.
*If you are feeling social you could request a seat at the bar.
*You could bring your laptop. I say this with caution. I have taken my laptop with me to coffee shops and wine bars and have worked while enjoying a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. I don't think it is always appropriate to work on your computer during your meal. I would not be comfortable working on my computer while eating a meal at a restaurant. For me, it would distract me from my meal and also may be a distraction to those seated beside me.
*You could bring your phone. I have been at solo meals where I have been on my phone. I would never talk on my phone during a meal because I feel that is disruptive to those around me but I have looked at internet articles or social media sites. I also take photos of the food and the surroundings. I never use a flash in a restaurant so as not to disrupt my neighbor's meal.
*You could bring a book or magazine. I think this is appropriate in any restaurant situation. I have read a book on many occasions during a meal.
*Research the restaurant before you go. I tend to look at reviews before going to a new restaurant. I also check for ease of parking and look at the menu to get an idea of what I would like to order.
If you have not attempted solo dining in a restaurant, I suggest you give it a try. The other day, I was feeling a bit down, so I decided to do a little self-care by taking myself out. I went to a local restaurant, sat alone, and enjoyed a delicious meal and a glass of wine. Then, I walked to a local wine lounge, where I enjoyed my second glass of wine. It was a lovely evening.
When you do go, go all out on your dining experience. You don't have to answer to anyone at your table except yourself. Order something different, and don't forget to order dessert.
Don't sit at home when you can enjoy a wonderful dining experience when dining solo!
