What is on your reading list for March? Kathiey's Reading List March 2018

Image
I love to read.  That being said I don't spend as much time reading as I probably should.  I am trying to spend more time enjoying the written word, and I do have several books on my March reading list.  So, What are my reading goals for March? When I get up in the morning I put the coffee on.  While I wait for the perfect cup of coffee I take some time for daily devotions.  I am reading Glimpses of God's Grace. Here is one of Anita's quotes that I like, "When we choose to follow God, He always goes before us."  I have three books on my night stand. Taking Life Not Too Seriously  by Maggie Clark.  I did my first book signing with Maggie.  You would love her. A Man Called Ove  by Fredrick Backman.  I am about a third of the way through this book.  One is a bit grumpy but a man of integrity. Night of Fire  by Colin Thubron.  I just started this book and find it interesting.  A devastating fire has star...

What North Carolina has a State Rock? Yes, and I know what it is....Granite

Image
Were you aware that states have a designated state rock?  I know we have the state bird, and the state flower but I was not aware of the state rock.  I looked it up on Wikipedia and they have a list of   "U.S. State Minerals, Rocks, Stones and Gemstones."   So what is our state rock you ask? Our state rock is Granite. "The General Assembly of 1979 designated  Granites   the official Rock for the State of North Carolina." Quote from the Reference Desk I like to think that I am staying true to my home state of NC because I have granite countertops.  Full disclosure, when I purchased my countertops, I had no idea this was the state rock/stone:-) "The State of North Carolina has been blessed with an abundant source of "the noble rock," granite. Just outside Mount Airy in Surry County is the largest open face granite quarry in the world measuring one mile long and 1,800 feet in width. The granite from this quarry is unblemished, gleaming, ...

Welcome to the World of Online Dating...Red Flags

Image
I never thought I would be saying "Welcome to the World of Online Dating," but here we are.  After a decade's long marriage I find myself on a dating site.  Who would have thought? I am doing my research.  I have visited many sites that discuss online dating.  On these sites, there are lists of precautions or "red flags," things to avoid.  Today I thought we would visit one that I found listed as a red flag on many sites....The Blurry Profile Photo. I have consulted numerous dating sites for their opinion on the blurry profile photo.  Most of the experts agree that this may be a red flag.  Here is the consensus. *If someone has only one picture and it is blurry they may be trying to hide something.  This person may be insecure about who they are and could be misrepresenting themselves. *Many agree that if there is only one blurry photo in a group of clear images, it is probably an innocent mistake. *It could be a fake profile. *If the person do...

The Joy

Image
"Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don't wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it's at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored." Earl  Nightingale My family does bring me great joy, and I am beyond thankful for them. "Joy is strength." Mother Teresa Wishing you joy! KathieyV:-)

Nana and Caleb's Adventures. The Tree Toss at the Conservators Center

Image
If you read my blog you know I am always on the lookout for a unique adventure.  I enjoy new experiences on my own, but one of my greatest joys is going on adventures with Caleb.  We call them "Nana's and Caleb's Adventures."  We had not been on an adventure outing in some time, and when I saw the Tree Toss advertised at the Conservators Center , I knew we had to go. You may be asking just what and where is the Conservators Center?  Here is a quote from their website... "The Conservators Center was founded in 1999 in Mebane, NC. After volunteering and working for other wildlife oriented organizations, Douglas Evans and Mindy Stinner founded the Center as an educational non-profit dedicated to providing a specialized home for select carnivore species. In 2001 the Center relocated onto 45 acres of beautiful, forested land in Caswell County, of which only approximately 10 acres is currently developed. Over the next few years, the site grew to house three tigers...

This Month in North Carolina History January 1716 The Blue Laws. (Voice Lessons for Everyone:-)

Image
In Jan 1716 the Blue Laws were instituted in North Carolina.  As I understand it these laws were rules that were established to observe the Sabbath.  It seemed to involve not doing business or buying alcohol on Sunday.  Thank goodness most of these laws are now off the books. I went to an online dictionary and found this definition of Blue Law a law prohibiting certain activities, such as shopping, on a Sunday. (in colonial New England) a strict religious law, particularly one preventing entertainment or leisure activities on a Sunday. Other NC Laws Reading about the Blue Laws lead me to site called  "Big Government. Small Brains. Dumb Laws" .  So now I have to read some of the silly laws that may still be on the books in NC.  I will share a few that I found on this site. *It is against the law to sing off key.  I know many folks who would be in jail if this was enforced.  * Persons in possession of illegal substance...
