Below is a blog post was written about eleven years ago when Caleb was a baby.   I am resharing this post and the cookie recipe. Give them a try; they a very good! Blast From the Past Over the weekend, Stephanie, Josh, and baby Caleb came for a visit.  It was wonderful! When they left to visit Josh's family, I had a choice.  I could take a nap which sounded inviting, or I could do something constructive.  After a mental debate, I decided to make cookies, so they would have a treat when they returned home.  I pulled out my recipe binder and came across an oldie but goodie...Honey Peanut Butter Cookies from Taste of Home Magazine. I gathered my ingredients. A 9.5 on my cooking scale.Yum:-) I preheated my oven to 350 degrees F. I mixed the shortening, peanut butter, and honey with my mixer.  Then I added the eggs and mixed them well.  Then I combined the dry ingredients in a different bowl and whisked them together. ...

Food-The Queen and Marmalade Sandwiches

Image
I do not follow the goings on of the royal family.  Over the years, I have heard bits and pieces of their lives, but other than an occasional tidbit of news, gossip, or a tragedy such as with Princess Diana, I know very little.   For some reason, I have always had great respect for the Queen.  She always seemed to be a person of high integrity, plus her physical appearance reminded me of my grandmother.  Since her death, I have read a few articles in relation to her life, and it has been an amazing one.  As far as food it seems she enjoyed marmalade.  There is even mention of marmalade sandwiches. The skit above was made with Paddington Bear for an upcoming Jubliee.  In the skit, Paddington Bear, who loves marmalade, had a marmalade sandwich hidden in his hat.  The queen surprises Paddington with one she carries in her purse. It seems that the Queen did enjoy marmalade on her morning toast, but there is no mention of her eating marmalade san...

Foodie Friday-Savory Pie Crust With Chives. How to Add Chives/Herbs to a Pre-Made Pie Crust

Image
I made a tomato pie recently.   The pie crust was the best thing about that recipe.  What made it so good were the chives that I added to the crust and it is super simple to make. You can add just about any herb to a savory pie crust.  What you choose is based on the flavor profile you are trying to achieve. The tomato pie recipe I was making added chives to both the store-bought pie crust and to the pie itself.  Here is the super simple recipe... Ingredients: *Packaged refrigerated piecrusts.  Be sure and get a package with two piecrusts.  *Two tablespoons of Chopped Fresh Chives. (If you decide to use dried herbs, use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon for each herb you use.  I used fresh chives.) Instructions: *Unroll one pie crust and sprinkle with 2 Tablespoons of fresh chopped chives.  *Place the second piecrust on top and then roll to seal the piecrusts together. *Transfer to a 9" pie plate pressing into the bottom and up the sides of the plate. There you h...

Foodie Friday-What do you look for in a Watermelon? Tips to Selecting the Perfect Watermelon.

Image
I decided to repost this article because it is watermelon season is drawing near.   These helpful hints in choosing the best watermelon have been on the money for me.   I love watermelon.  I can remember as a kid on the farm sitting outside with a huge slice of watermelon.  Forget the plates and forks and knives.  My mom would hand me a juicy slice, and then I would proceed to take a bite.  My dad taught me the fine art of sprinkling salt on my watermelon.  Delicious! "Salt makes watermelon taste sweeter by creating a salty sweet contrast that allows the sweetness of the melon to stand out."  Baking Bites Have you ever headed to the local market in search of a mouth-watering melon only to realize you had no idea how to pick the perfect one?  Most of us have watched our parents thump on a melon listening for that classic ripe sound.  I have done this myself, having no idea what tone I was seeking.  Sometimes I was lucky and pi...
