I have lived in North Carolina since the early '90s.  I had heard of Lake Lure but have not taken the time to visit until now.  I don't know why I waited so long.  It is beautiful. I will share some of my photos and some tidbits I found online... A bit of history... In 1925, the Morse family created Carolina Mountain Power Company and funded the construction of a dam on the Broad River (through a mortgage) which produced the  lake  after which the town is named. The full impoundment of  Lake Lure  was completed in 1927. Wikipedia  The best way to see the lake was to venture out onto the lake.  You can take a pontoon boat ride with Lake Lure Tours , which is what I decided to do.  It takes about an hour, and you have a lovely cruise on the lake and learn a bit about Lake Lure and its history. Exploring North Carolina. My visit to Patterson's Mill Country Store in Durham North Carolina. You can see from the sign above that this store was established in 1973.  The feel of the store is one of being founded at least a hundred years ago.  When you go inside you are greeted with antiques, collectibles, old books and memorabilia plus they even have penny candy. Take a look at all the goodies. I remember the rotary phones. When I was very young, I recall we even had a party line.  Many times I would pick up the phone to find someone else talking.  The hand crank phone was before my time.  You can find both of these phones at the Country Store.  Yummy candy. Maggie would love this doll house! My Favorite part of the country store is the old pharmacy and turn of the century Dr's office. As I was exploring downtown New Bern I stumbled upon the cutest cafe, The Cow Cafe . It was a rather hot day, and the thought of ice cream was inviting.   So I decided to check it out. Here is a quote from their website... "The black and white Holstein awnings is the hint that Cow Cafe isn't your ordinary eatery.  Nestled deep in the cow country of New Bern, North Carolina (or Moo Bern in cow language), we serve a full line of sandwiches, wraps, salads, plates and, of course,  HOMEMADE ICE CREAM!" The menu items looked good, but I was here for the ice cream.  I decided to go with the "Udder Pecan".  (I used to enjoy butter pecan ice cream with my mom, it was her favorite). There is a variety of seating.  The main dinning room is in the front of the restaurant.
