21c Museum Hotel in Durham NC. Loved the Fuchsia Penguins:-)

Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting the Museum Hotel in downtown Durham NC.  I remember when it was the old Suntrust Building.  Built 1935-1937 and called the Hill Building it was fashioned after the Empire State Building.  It just recently became the Museum Hotel.  Cindy and I decided to check it out.
Here is a quote from their website....
"Located in the heart of downtown Durham and occupying the historic Hill Building, 21c Museum Hotel Durham is a 125-room boutique hotel, contemporary art museum, cultural civic center, and home to Counting House restaurant. Stay with us and the iconic Fuchsia Penguin."
"Other quirks make the hotel unique, such as rubber duckies in every bathtub — “They’re just a crowd pleaser,” and large pink ceramic penguins, art that the guests can interact with.Stites explained that the penguins can visit guests for dinner or even in their rooms. They originally began as an art piece at Louisville’s 21c, but when the exhibit rotated, the penguins stayed.“We couldn’t let the penguins go because everyone fell in love with them,” Stites said. “They quickly became an icon for the brand.”

We both really liked the Fuchsia Penguins.  You never knew where you might bump into one...

I found this guy in the museum....
The museum is open 24 hours a day and is free to the public.  I did hear someone say that the exhibits change every 6 months.....

At one point, we could look down on the art focused bar....
So we had to stop in for a drink at The Counting House.  They have a full bar and restaurant.  We only checked out the bar.  I do want to go back and experience the flavors for their food sometime hopefully soon....

A few of Cindy's friends happened to be having a party in the penthouse suite.  We were invited up to see the room and the view....
Nice view....
Nice room....
To quote one of her friends...."The Party Got a Bit Crazy"
Glad we didn't stay to see that:-)

"It's practically impossible to look at a penguin and feel angry"

Another great evening exploring downtown Durham.  If you are visiting the area, I suggest you stay at the Museum Hotel.  It is a treat.
FYI If you use the museum restrooms be sure and turn the lock when you get inside.  The walls are glass and everyone can see in.  If you turn the lock the windows become opaque.  At least I hope they did, Yikes:-)
Happy Travels

  1. Their manager rocks! Thanks to their great team, I'm so happy I choose this venue for my event! I had a great time at event space here and think the atmosphere is as good as it gets. I will be astonished if I ever find a negative review on these guys.
